Toss in a chip, say

Once upon a time, in a dusty old saloon in the Wild West, a group of poker players were seated around a table. They were all eyeing each other suspiciously, waiting for the next hand to be dealt. Suddenly, one player stood up and threw a chip into the center of the table. “I’ll toss in a chip,” he said confidently, “and raise you another ten dollars.”

The other players murmured in agreement, placing their own chips in the center of the table. The stakes were getting high, and tensions were rising.

Just as the dealer was about to deal the next hand, a curious newcomer entered the saloon. He approached the table, watching the game with great interest. “What’s going on here?” he asked.

“We’re playing poker,” one of the players replied, “and we just tossed in our chips to start the next round.”

The newcomer nodded, understanding the concept. “So, you’re all anteing up,” he said with a grin.

The players looked at each other in surprise – they had never heard that word before. “Anteing up?” they repeated.

The newcomer chuckled. “Yep. Tossing in a chip at the start of the game is called anteing up. It’s a common term in poker.”

The players looked at each other in amazement. They had been playing this game for years, and yet they had never learned this basic term. Thanks to the newcomer, they had finally solved the crossword clue – “Toss in a chip, say” – and discovered the answer – “ANTE“.

From that day on, the term “ante” became a regular part of their poker vocabulary. And the newcomer? Well, he turned out to be a pretty good player himself.
