In a small town, there lived two neighbors – Mr. Smith and Ms. Johnson. They were always arguing with one another about everything ranging from their property lines to what color to paint their fences. It seemed as though they couldn’t agree on anything.

One day, Mr. Smith decided to challenge Ms. Johnson to a word game. He handed her a crossword puzzle and said, “Let’s see who can finish this first.

Ms. Johnson eagerly took up the challenge and began to work on the puzzle. As she made her way through the clues, she came across one that read, “Likely to cause an argument.” She thought about it for a moment and suddenly the answer came to her – CONTENTIOUS!

She grinned to herself and turned to Mr. Smith. “This clue describes our relationship!” she exclaimed, pointing at the answer. Mr. Smith had to laugh. “Well, I guess you’re right,” he said. “We do argue a lot.”

From that day forward, whenever they were about to argue, one of them would jokingly say, “Oh, let’s not be so contentious!” The word had become a code for them to remind each other to calm down and not let their disagreements get out of hand.

And so, the crossword puzzle had not only provided a solution to their argument but had made their relationship stronger by giving them a word they could use to defuse any potential arguments in the future.
