Crossing swords

Once upon a time, there were two swordsmen – Jack and John – who saw each other as rivals in the battlefield. They would clash swords every time they met, each wanting to prove they were the better swordsman.

One day, they met at a crossing in a forest, unsure of which path to take. They both spotted a clue written on a tree nearby that said “Crossing swords”. They knew what the clue was pointing them towards, and they took it to mean that they should fight each other to determine who would take which path.

The battle was fierce, with swords clashing and sparks flying. After several bruises and close calls, Jack emerged as the winner. John was left wounded and defeated, and Jack made sure he would not interfere in his path.

At the end of the day, Jack realized that even though he had won the battle, he was still at odds with John. The clue had therefore been a riddle, meant to challenge them to figure out that they were already at odds with each other. Jack took one path, and John took the other, both going their separate ways with a better understanding of the true meaning of ‘Crossing swords’.
