Counterparts of sirs

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom where only men were granted the title of “sir“. The women of the kingdom felt left out and wanted a title of their own. One day, a group of women decided to take matters into their own hands and came up with a plan. They gathered together and decided that they would refer to each other as “madam“, a word that meant “my lady“.

The women were delighted with their new title and soon the word “madam” became popular amongst them. The men of the kingdom were a bit confused at first, wondering what the word meant and why the women were using it, but soon they understood that it was the counterpart of “sir“.

And so, the women of the kingdom finally had a title that was just as prestigious as “sir“. From that day on, when the crossword clue asked for counterparts of sirs, the answer would always be “madams“.
